Item Details
Description
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik River, ca. mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden canoe prow in the form of a mystical fish with a long snout, a large eye, and a bird perched atop the tip of its face. In the past and today, the prows of large canoes in this culture are carved, often in the form of animals with connections to the clan who carved the piece. When the boat has outlived its useful life, these prows are cut free and used as art objects. Size: 7.25" W x 20.5" H (18.4 cm x 52.1 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex Royal Athena Gallery, New York, USA, from the estate of Bella Linden, originally acquired in the 1960s
