Description
A very rare carved wooden mask with a highly stylized and abstract form, raised designs and undeniable well handled surface. Such masks are found among the Southern Yoruba of Ijebu, these headdresses are used for the masquerade cult known as Ekine (meaning 'dancing people' in Ijo), which pay homage to Olokun, goddess of the sea as well as a number of other water spirits. A metal display stand can be included for an additional $35.00. Provenance: Ex Leonard Kahan Gallery, New York, Ex McConnel collection, Virginia. The mask measures 28.5 x 8 inches.
