With 60 (of 61) hand-colored maps (30 are double-page) plus insets and other small maps; 1 hand-colored double-page plate showing the Mountains and Rivers of the world; another double showing the Flags or "National Emblems" of the world; 1 hand-colored time table plate; 12 hand-colored map charts; several wood-engraved vignettes; plus a steel-engraved plate before the title page titled "American Atlas." (Folio) 18x14½, contents loosely laid inside the original half-morocco and blue-green cloth, lettered in gilt, front cover stamped with U.S. Seal vignette, marbled endpapers.



Johnson's 1864 atlas, which includes the large-scale double-page map of the Vicinity of Richmond and the Peninsular Campaign in Virginia...," showing the country between Richmond and Hampton Roads; also, a double-page maps of Texas; New York; and other states, including the entire southwest region with Arizona and New Mexico in the proper positions side-by-side. Also, a full-page map of Nebraska, Dakota, Colorado, Idaho & Kansas with Idaho encompassing most of present-day Montana and Wyoming. Lacking the final map (98/99 Ancient Greece and Rome). Condition
Rubbing at spine ends and corners, a few scuffs; leaves mildly toned, a few foxing spots and stains; very good or better.
