Bookplate of John Randolph of Roanoke on front pastedown, from his extensive library of classical books. Randolph was a major early 19th century Virginia statesman and legislator who opposed Andrew Jackson and advocated the States' rights. He was a classical scholar with a vast library second only in size in Virginia to Thomas Jefferson's. Also early pencil notation on the ffep.

Front cover stained and chewed at bottom; good to very good.
