Description
A highly detailed Roman pottery oil lamp depicting Leda and the Swan, c. 2nd Century AD, of Loeschcke VIII type, the discus with Leda being mounted by Zeus in the form of a swan. The discus is set off by a groove, the nozzle short and rounded with ring handle. On base, circular groove bordering maker's mark COPPIRES. L: 3 /5 in (9.2cm.). Well-preserved with remnants of dark brown glaze beneath light surface deposits. Ex German private collection; Royal Athena Galleries, New York.
