Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, northern coast, Moche, ca. 500 to 800 CE. Attractive ample pottery jar in the form of a sitting toad with large conical spout atop his back. Redware vessel highlighted in much added white pigment. Toad sports a broad smiling mouth, bulging eyes, large raised nose with three objects - probably hallucinogenic pods - hanging from each side of his neck. Frogs and toads were viewed as harbingers of the spring season, and the Moche were known to use frog/toads to extract strong hallucinogenic drugs. Size: 7" W x 7.375" H (17.8 cm x 18.7 cm)
