Description
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Chorrera, ca. 9th to 4th century BCE. A skillfully executed human effigy vessel with characteristic voluminous, rounded forms and a relatively minimalist aesthetic when it comes to defining the anatomy. The figure lies upon its back as if deep in slumber, with chubby arms held to the sides - hands with incised fingers protruding just a bit - and short rotund legs extending to simple feet with incised toes. The abdominal region is open to provide the vessel's storage chamber. The broad head presents a simple visage comprised of coffee bean shaped raised and slit eyes, a protruding pointy nose, a slightly raised slit mouth, cup-shaped ears, and a plain, tightly fitted cap or coiffure. The body appears to be genderless with very little additional ornament aside from the elegant application of red and orange slip. Size: 5.25" L x 7.625" W x 3.625" H (13.3 cm x 19.4 cm x 9.2 cm)
