LARGE ALASKAN GOLD NUGGET, as-found in original quartz matrix. Total weight: 134.3 grams/86.2 dwt. 1 1/2" x 1 1/4".

Provenance: Descended in the family of Senator Marcus Allen Coolidge, Fitchburg, MA.
Catalogue Note: This nugget was acquired by Senator Coolidge during an Alaskan trip around 1920. Marcus Allen Coolidge (1865-1947) was a Democratic United States Senator representing Massachusetts from March 4, 1931 to January 3, 1937. In 1916, Coolidge was elected mayor of Fitchburg, Massachusetts. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson appointed Coolidge as special envoy to Poland to represent the Peace Commission. He became chairman of the Democratic state convention in 1920.
