STUFFED DONKEY TOY, FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT GIFT, velveteen with flop ears, button eyes, and remnants of saddle. Circa 1940. 8" H, 9 1/2" L.
Well-loved condition, one leg partially detached, losses to saddle, other wear.
Provenance: Descended in the family of Harry Hines Woodring, Topeka, KS.
Gift from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Marcus Woodring, June 20, 1940.
Catalogue Note: This donkey was a gift from President Roosevelt to seven-year old Marcus Woodring, son of Harry Hines Woodring (1887-1967). The Woodring family was invited to the White House to say goodbye to the President after Secretary of War Woodring resigned his post.
Copies of photos showing Marcus with his donkey at the White House accompany this lot. A photo is also published in Keith McFarland's biography of Harry Woodring.
