Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manteno culture, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. A group of five hand-built pottery spindle whorl beads, each vertically perforated for suspension. Each bead is ovoid in appearance, with three displaying a dark-gray color, and the remaining two a light-brown hue. This group of spindle whorls have a common incised pelican motif. Ancient Manteno culture states that pelicans were highly-symbolic animals capable of traversing the many realms of existence including that of the earth, the cloudy heavens, and the watery depths of the underworld. Size of largest (all fairly similar in size): 0.55" W (1.4 cm).
