**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manteno culture, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. A lovely lot of miniature terracotta spindle whorls, all of which are vertically drilled for suspension. Each spherical or ovoid body displays a dark gray exterior color, with incised details exhibiting a chalky white hue. The spindle whorls have a common pelican theme which, in Manteno culture, is highly symbolic. The pelican is seen as a mythical animal capable of traversing the boundaries between heaven, earth, and the watery underworld, and are believed to be symbolic of fertility as well. A beautiful ensemble of wonderfully-emblematic pottery miniatures! Size of largest (all fairly similar in size): 0.45" W (1.1 cm).
