Description
Pre-Columbian, Mesoamerican, ca. 750 to 1500 CE. This is a collection of 45 decorated baked clay spindle whorls, or malacates as they are known in both Spanish and Nahuatl. They come in a variety of colors: black, cream, grey-green, and different shades of brown and red. Each has a unique design. Spindle whorls are perforated disks that were used in the production of spun fiber, and as a result are the most common evidence for the production of textiles in pre-Columbian Latin America. Each has a hole in the center and could easily be used to make jewelry. Size of largest: 1" in diameter (2-1/2 cm).
