Item Details
Description
THE ELEVENTH LAND RECEIPT ISSUED BY THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS, FEBRUARY 23, 1836, SIGNED BY GAIL BORDEN (1801-1874) AND EDMUND ANDREWS (1814-1843), typed and inscribed ink on paper, reads: "NO. 11. Received of G. Borden for land, collector of public dues for the department of Brazos, thirty two dollars, sixty cents, in payment to the state, on all the installments on one league of land, granted to me on the 30 day of November 1830 said payment being endorsed on a Tuesday Order, dated 7th Feb 1836, numbered 275, lettered 6, drawn in favor of J. Urban for forty dollars, signed triplicate." 3 1/2" x 9 1/2" NOTE: Of interesting historical note, the Battle of the Alamo, began on the same date this receipt was issued. Gail Borden (1801-1874) was an early Texas settler, member of the Texian Army, land surveyor, the only Texas newspaper publisher to report on the Alamo, philanthropist, and most famous for his invention of condensed milk. Edmund Andrews (circa 1814-1843) was a settler in Stephen F. Austin's colony, arriving in Brazoria County, Texas, in 1830 December from Carolina. He remained there and served as a judge and postmaster of San Luis. In 1830, Andrews married Isabella Maria Barclay, a widow. He adopted her three children, two of whom were Henry and Edwin Marston Barclay.
Condition
Some acid spots with mild foxing, three deckle edges, mild yellowing of paper, slight lightening of ink, pencil markings in upper right corner, but overall in very good condition, wear commensurate with age.
