Description
**Previously Listed At $100**
Ancient Near East, modern day northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. This is a lost wax cast bronze spearhead with a raised rib extending to a thick tang that flares slightly for hafting and ends in a curve at the tip. The style of the spearhead is that of Marlik, a major archaeological site associated with Luristan. Size: 10.7" L x 1.9" W (27.2 cm x 4.8 cm)
Within the fifty three rock tombs surveyed at Marlik, researchers found a large number of bronze spearheads, which they have theorized were very popular weapons for Marlik's warriors, who lived in a forested, mountainous region. Some examples of these spearheads have shown evidence of textiles remaining on the tang, suggesting that this piece was originally set into a long, wooden handle. This particular weapon does not bear marks of having been repeatedly sharpened for use, as some from the area do, so it was probably made specifically to accompany a warrior in death.
Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection, acquired over twenty years ago
