Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Chorrera culture, ca. 9th to 4th century BCE. An early and creative double-lobed whistling vessel. Each lobe is the body of a monkey. One sits facing forward, one hand to its mouth and the other hovering above its genitals, a naughty look on his face. The other reaches out with long legs and long arms to form the junction between the lobes. Their faces have delightful and naturalistic details. A spout rises from the top of one monkey's head. Overall, the pottery is burnished a grey-orange. Chorrera ceramics like this one often have well-finished surfaces; they represent a culture that spanned from the desert to the sea but had a fairly uniform artistic tradition that included a natural realism and a playful spirit. Size: 4" L x 9.5" W x 6.4" H (10.2 cm x 24.1 cm x 16.3 cm)
