Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Vicús culture, ca. 200 BCE to 600 CE. This is a double vessel with a narrow spout on one side, a strap handle between the two bulbous bottoms, and a seated jaguar perched atop the other side. Black and red lines and, on the jaguar, spots decorate this beautiful vessel, which still functions as a whistle. The Vicús culture is one of the earliest known ceramic making traditions in Peru, comparable to the Olmec in Mesoamerica, and in this vessel you can see the tradition that would lead to later styles like those of the Moche and the Inca. Size: 4.25" L x 9.75" W x 8" H (10.8 cm x 24.8 cm x 20.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Reid Collection
