Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Inca, ca. 1400 to 1532 CE. A wonderful terracotta double-chambered whistling vessel comprised of 2 vernacular house forms, each capped by an elongated tubular neck: one leading to the flared spout and the other to a petite, perched bird with a pierced chest that once allowed it to produce a lovely whistle. The domestic chambers each display a cylindrical form with a tiered conical roof, a central doorway, and several rectangular windows. Adorned in orange and red slip, this is a special vessel that was designed so that when water would be poured from it, one could hear a lovely high pitched whistling sound - as if the sweet bird was tweeting. Size: 7.1" W x 7.8" H (18 cm x 19.8 cm)

Condition
No longer functions as a whistle. Professionally repaired with areas of restoration and repainting - all very well done and difficult to discern. Minute nicks to rim, base below bird, high-pointed features of the bird, peripheries of tiered roofs, and base of vessel. Normal surface wear with scuffs and areas of abrasions. Otherwise, very nice with great pigments. Scattered deposits as shown.
