Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. A delightful pottery, double-chambered stirrup vessel featuring an intricately formed cacique and still producing a high-pitched whistle! Enveloped in a pale-yellow slip, the dish is comprised of 2 discoid chambers connected via a horizontal channel and each supported by a conical foot. The stylized effigy of a cacique - a respected village elder - stands atop 1 chamber wearing a bicorn headdress, annular earspools, and several necklaces with arms akimbo. A strap handle arches from the shoulder of the figure to the elongated mouthpiece which rises from the opposite chamber. Size: 7.6" W x 10.5" H (19.3 cm x 26.7 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Artemis Gallery, Louisville, Colorado, USA, August 5th, 2021, lot 128; ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998
