Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chavin culture, 900 to 200 BCE. A pair of magnificently carved stone and shell anthropomorphic figures. The bodies are carved frin red sodalite and sponydlus shells form the eyes. Both have a focus on the heads, with the bodies assuming more abstract shapes. They are unique and eye catching! Comes with custom stand. Size of tallest: 4" H (10.2 cm)
These were used as grips on atl atls, some of the most long-lasting technology in human history - used as a hunting tool and, sometimes, in war. The Chavin people lived in the northern Highland Andes, and their capital, Chavin de Huantar, is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The artwork of Chavin represents the first widespread style in the Andes, and their human figures show a wonderful stylized form that speaks to what they found important in representation - the face and the wide open eyes, which in many cultures is a sign of devotion to the gods or a heightened religious state.
