Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque, ca. 500 CE. A finely modeled shaman figure, sitting upon a stool, extending his arms outward, holding ritualistic implements in his hands. His expressive visage presents a transformative human/jaguar state, with pronounced arched brows adorned with circular 'curls' that are liberally painted with blue-green pigment, wide open angry eyes, a bulbous zoomorphic nose, and an open mouth revealing a grimace full of fangs and teeth with a wagging red tongue. Adding to this are the elaborate ear ornaments, a multi-stranded pectoral - both with painted blue-green highlights - a loin cloth, a pair of mesmerizing tubular earlike appendages emerging from the back of his head, and let's not forget that bushy tail. Quite an animated fellow, with ample remains of blue, red, and yellow applied pigment. Size: 5.375" L x 4.5" W x 7.125" H (13.7 cm x 11.4 cm x 18.1 cm)

The jaguar symbolized power and might throughout the Pre-Columbian world. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. A nocturnal animal, the jaguar sleeps in caves and dark places and creeps quietly in the forest, evoking great mystery.

Provenance: private Shillo Adir collection, Park Avenue, New York USA, acquired in the 1970's
