Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque (Jama Coaque), ca. 100 to 500 CE. An expressive pottery vessel in the form of a transitional jaguar. It has circular eyes with bulging pupils, a petite nose, an open mouth displaying several long fangs, and an ornate headdress with low-relief circular motifs and a tall crest. The body is slender, with two attenuated legs covered by a quadrilateral loincloth, and a large disc-shaped pectoral resting in the center of the chest; a small flat-topped tail projects from the lower half of the verso. The eyes, crosshatched necklace, feet, and headdress all showcase a vibrant shade of turquoise, and the body has two vertical perforations at the top and bottom. Size: 5" H (12.7 cm).

Condition
Age-commensurate surface wear, fading to applied pigmentation, and losses to headdress, arms, parts of tail, and areas of verso. Large areas of dark discoloration, with earthen and mineral deposits throughout.
