European Chert Hand Axe - Funnelbeaker Culture
European Chert Hand Axe - Funnelbeaker Culture
Item Details
Description
Northern / Eastern Europe, Funnelbeaker culture (Trichterbecherkultur), ca. 3900 to 3400 BCE. A huge, heavy hand axe, knapped from a golden brown and "root beer" brown piece of chert. This culture is named for its characteristic ceramics, beakers with funnel-shaped tops found in dolmen burials. The Funnelbeaker people were primarily engaged in farming, and their settlements consisted of houses centered around a monumental dolmen or passage grave. At graves, people sacrificed ceramic vessels containing food, amber jewelry, and axes like this one. Chert like this was probably mined from the Malmo (modern day southwestern Sweden) region and traded throughout the cultural region. Size: 8.75" L x 3.05" W (22.2 cm x 7.7 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey USA collection, acquired over twenty years ago
