Northern Africa, Sahara Desert, Neolithic period, ca. 6000 to 3500 BCE. A lovely hand axe, hand-knapped from deep-green chert. The axe has a thick butt end which bears a rounded profile and tapers gently towards a sharpened tip. These people also produced some of the oldest pottery in the world and, from about 5000 BCE, had domesticated cattle, sheep, and goats. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only.
