Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 600 to 100 BCE. A hand-carved greenstone axe god figure with a tapered base, a string-cut neck line, and shallow grooves to denote the eyes and mouth. Scholars believe these figures to have been created from damaged or otherwise discarded axe heads, hence the name 'axe god'. Size: 1.2" L x 1.85" W x 3.69" H (3 cm x 4.7 cm x 9.4 cm)
Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966

Minor abrasions and nicks, with scattered earthen deposits, and softening to some facial details, otherwise intact and very good. Nice preservation to abstract form.
