Description
Roman Empire, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An attractive mold-made terracotta discus-shaped oil lamp with a flat concentric ringed base, a short round wick nozzle, an ovalo-variant shoulder design with several palm leaf impressions, a rough-hewn fill hole, and a recessed tondo displaying an impassioned entwinement between a satyr and a goat. A strange sight for modern times, but quite common in antiquity. While faint, there may be a maker's mark or signature on the bottom of this lamp. Size: 3.375" L x 2.75" W x 1" H (8.6 cm x 7 cm x 2.5 cm).
