Provenance: purchased in Paris in the 1950s, then by descent to current consignor. Illegible gallery stamps on the stretcher bar (Pierre...). A typical Rochegrosse scene showing a Roman family from antiquity watching two quails fight, accompanied by bewildered children, allegorical figures and a third quail that was recently killed in another fight.
