Striking psychedelic poster featuring maverick Presidential candidate Eugene McCarthy, U.S. Senator from Minnesota, whose anti-war candidacy roiled the 1968 primary season and led to the withdrawal from the contest by incumbent Lyndon Johnson. McCarthy's opposition to the Vietnam War strongly appealed to younger voters, and made him a fitting subject for this poster by the counterculture artist Satty. Satty, born in Germany as Wifried Podriech, surviving the bombing of his hometown of Bremen as a young boy during World War II. As a young man, he had three years of apprenticeship in mechanical engineering, worked in Canada, and then moved to San Francisco in 1961. He lived in North Beach, and associated with artists and bohemians of the Beat Generation. During the 1960's and 1970's his colorful and psychedelic art and posters appeared in both counterculture and establishment periodicals. His art has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; the National Museum of Art, Belgrade; and the National Museum, Warsaw.
