August 24, 1775 New Hampshire Note Genuine & Original
NICHOLAS GILMAN (1755-1814). Delegate to the Continental Congress, Signer of the U.S. Constitution, representing New Hampshire, a member of the United States House of Representatives during the first four Congresses, and served in the U.S. Senate (1805-1814)
Colony of New Hampshire. August 24, 1775. Three Pounds. Genuine. Redemption Due Date of December 10, 1777. Extremely Fine. Fr. NH-141. This is a scarce fully Genuine Revolutionary War Colony of New Hampshire August 24, 1775 Three Pounds note. It is boldly printed in dark black on a white period laid paper. This note is very well margined with a large indented left side margin which includes the printed text “three pounds”. It is evenly circulated, its vertical centerfold is reinforced and the blank reverse remains quite clean. This uncancelled example having a bold red serial number plus the signatures of Nicholas Gilman in rich red and E. Thompson in light brown. A desirable genuine, non-cancelled note which is preferred by most collectors.
Nicholas Gilman, Jr. (August 3, 1755 – May 2, 1814) was a soldier in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, a Delegate to the Continental Congress, and a Signer of the U.S. Constitution, representing New Hampshire. He was a member of the United States House of Representatives during the first four Congresses, and served in the U.S. Senate from 1805 until his death in 1814.
His brother John Taylor Gilman was also very active in New Hampshire politics, serving as Governor of New Hampshire for 14 years, as well as a principal benefactor of Phillips Exeter Academy. Their childhood home in Exeter is now the American Independence Museum.
