Description
South Carolina Currency
February 8, 1779 $40 "Angel Blowing Her Trumpet" South Carolina Revolutionary War Rare Low Denomination Note
South Carolina, February 8, 1779, Forty Dollars, Engraved "Ceres" Obverse and "Angel Blowing Her Trumpet and holding her Book titled 'ANNALS OF AMERICA'" vignette on the reverse, Crisp Extremely Fine.
Fr. SC-153. This scarce Forty Dollars, February 8, 1779 note is the Lowest Denomination of this popular Revolutionary War issue. The entire original issue contained only seven denominations including: $40, $50, $60, $70, $80, $90 and $100 notes. The $40 had only 2,000 notes printed, making it the lowest quantity issued, as well as the lowest, most heavily circulated and by far the rarest, of all seven denominations. This note is well printed in deep black and extremely well centered both face and back. There are four full margins with all designs present, having slight circulation and a heavy tone or stain at the mid right margin edge. An elusive denomination and type which does not appear at auction very often. Sharply signed by Edward Trescot, Philip Prioleau and William Morgan, all in easily readable brown ink. This $40 denomination is typically lacking in most Colonial Currency collections.
