First Limited Edition. An elaborate memorial of George Washington's Revolutionary War service, sold for the benefit of what eventually evolved into the first school for the Deaf in America. Also inserted is a separately- printed 3-page appeal by Peter W. Gallaudet, once Washington's personal secretary, for funds to establish what Washington had hoped would be a "Manual Labour School and Male Orphan Asylum". Instead the funds were used by Galludet's son, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, to found the first school in America for the education of the Deaf. This is also a significant association copy, inscribed on flyleaf. "To Samuel Rogers, Esq., With the Respectful Compliments of John P. Kennedy, Baltimore U.S., Nov. 12, 1838" John Pendleton Kennedy was both a novelist and politician, author of some of the earliest popular American novels, later President Fillmore's Secretary of the Navy who helped launch the Perry Expedition to Japan. He numbered among his friends some giants of American and British literature of his day, including Irving, Poe, Cooper, Thackeray, Dickens - and British Romantic poet Samuel Rogers, to whom he presented this book the year he was elected to the US House of Representatives.
