Description
Continental Currency
Remarkable Circulated May 20, 1777 Counterfeit Note of the First "The UNITED STATES" Titled Continental Issue
Continental Congress Currency. May 20, 1777. Eight Dollars. Contemporary Counterfeit. PMG graded Very Fine-30.
Fr. CC-69CFT. An important Revolutionary War Contemporary Counterfeit note from this scarce May 20, 1777 Continental Congress currency emission as listed in Newman. Its PMG holder states previously mounted. There are a number of small surface thins and prior mounting traces on this note's reverse, it having been removed from being laid down at one time with red wax, most likely during the Revolutionary War period after apparently having been discovered and removed from circulation. However, quite remarkably, there are no manuscript cancels or other markings or distractions as typically seen on Counterfeits. This note is boldly signed, "G Welsch" and appears clean on its face, well printed, and centered. A rarity for those reasons and being a Counterfeit note on the First "The UNITED STATES" Titled Continental Currency Issue.
