Description
North Carolina Currency
"The Rising States" $5 August 8, 1778 North Carolina
North Carolina. August 8, 1778. Five Dollars. "The Rising States" motto. PCGS graded Very Fine-35.
FR. NC-181. A pleasing high quality Revolutionary War period note that bears a historic "The Rising States" motto at the lower left. A pleasing quality conservatively graded note. This second to the highest denomination of the issue had Only 5,000 notes issued, far fewer than most other denominations. This note has four sharp full margins with both signatures present signed by C. Markland and R. White. The serial number is also written in brown ink. A contemporary signature is on the reverse at left. The PCGS holder incorrectly lists the Friedberg number as Fr. NC-176d and a $5 instead of $50 denomination, plus mentions minor restorations (which this cataloger fails to confirm). It leads us to believe the grade is also incorrect whereby it appears crisp Extremely Fine or better. This $50 denomination is a rarer note lacking in many collections.
