Description
Magnificent Civil War Presentation Grade Silver Grip Staff and Field Officers' Sword. 32-inch, slightly curved, single-edge blade with wide fullers on either side. Obverse ricasso marked "W. / CLAUBERG/ [Knight logo] / SOLINGEN"; obverse ricasso blank. Both sides of the blade are lightly etched with floral scroll, the obverse with an intertwined "US". The large gilded-brass half-basket guard features pierced floral designs and an eagle with shield upon his breast with a riband in his beak. The pommel is lavishly decorated with cast foliate designs and a bust of presumably Mars, the God of War on the leading edge of the pommel. The quillon terminates in a fierce eagle head. The silver grip features alternating rows of blank and floral decorated bands with eleven twisted wire wraps. Equally impressive is the scabbard which exhibits ornately decorated cast brass mounts. The throat features a delicate floral design, the upper mount with a standing soldier with rifle before two flags; the middle mount a charging mounted soldier; and the lower mount Lady Columbia. Between the mounts is a brass floral frame, presumably to surround a presentation inscription. The reverse sides of the mounts are more simply decorated with engraved geometric and floral designs. The metal portion of the scabbard is browned, making the sword even more visually appealing.
Condition: Excellent. The blade has moderate pitting on either side at the midpoint and point, the rest a smooth gray patina. The hilt retains approximately 50% gilt. The brass scabbard fittings retain much of the original gilt. The scabbard with only a few trivial, small, shallow dents.
