South Carolina Governor & Namesake of “Fort Moultrie”
WILLIAM MOULTRIE (1730-1805). American Revolutionary War officer; Governor of South Carolina; namesake of Fort Moultrie.
August 5, 1793-Dated Federal Period, Partly-Printed Document Signed, “Will:m Moultrie” as Governor of South Carolina, Columbia, 1 page, measuring 11” x 16.5”, Very Good. A Land Grant to William Minor of 12,780 acres “in the District of Orangeburg near the Waters of the Upper Three Runs...” Attached to the land grant by a ribbon is a 13” x 3.75” certification signed by William Minor. A separate Hand-drawn Map of the surveyed area is also present, 12.5” x 15.5” which was once attached to the certification with three wax seals. William Moultrie has signed boldly on either side of the ribbon, which attaches the two sheets together at bottom. Boldly printed on heavy laid watermarked period paper with light offset from the large wax and paper Embossed State Seal, which is present but is no longer attached. Some paper loss and tears along center horizontal fold. Still an attractive document. Moultrie is known for repulsing the British attack on Sullivan’s Island, now Fort Moultrie, in Charleston harbor on June 28, 1776. He was held prisoner by the British from 1780-82.
