GEORGE V: (1865-1936) King of the United Kingdom 1910-36. T.L.S., George R.I., as King, with holograph subscription ('Sir My Brother & dear Cousin, Your Majesty's Affectionate Brother & Cousin'), two pages, 4to, Buckingham Palace, 31st December 1935, to King George II of Greece, on official mourning stationery. The King writes a formal diplomatic letter, commencing 'It is with the deepest sorrow that I have to announce to Your Majesty the decease of My dearly beloved Sister Her Royal Highness the Princess Victoria Alexandra Olga Mary, which took place at Iver, Buckinghamshire, on the morning of the 3rd instant' and continuing 'From the proofs of friendship which You have manifested towards Me on other occasions I cannot but feel persuaded that Your Majesty will fully sympathize in the profound grief which has thus fallen upon Me and upon My Royal House', before concluding 'In expressing My earnest wishes that Your Majesty may long be preserved from all similar causes of sorrow I avail Myself of this opportunity to renew to You the assurance of the invariable friendship and high esteem with which I am.' Accompanied by the original envelope featuring a large black wax seal to the verso. VG

George II (1890-1947) King of Greece 1922-24, 1935-47.

Princess Victoria (1868-1935) Princess Victoria of Wales, daughter of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, the younger sister of King George V, had died on 3rd December 1935.

King George V, greatly affected by his favourite sister's death, died on 20th January 1936, less than a month after signing the present letter.
