Description
Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru., Chimu culture, ca. 1100 to 1400 CE. Blackware pottery stirrup vessel in the form of a Pakay seed pod (ice cream bean) with a monkey clinging to the spout. Size: 8.25" H (21 cm).
The Chimu culture succeeded Moche culture on the north coast of Peru. Their capital was the city of Chan Chan. They had a highly developed pottery and metalwork industry. They were conquered by the Inca shortly before the Spanish arrival.
Provenance: Formerly in a Wisconsin private collection, 1970-80's; previously Royce Hubert collection.
