**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A mold-made blackware pottery stirrup vessel with a bulbous body, round shoulders decorated with low-relief stippling, a ringed handle, and an amusing jaguar design surrounding the tubular spout. The majority of the feline's body is roughly flat and presented in low-relief, while its head is three dimensional and sporting a pair of cupped ears, coffee-bean-shaped eyes, and a prominent snout. The jaguar is one of the most important symbols in ancient Mesoamerica, denoting power, strength, and ferocity all while being shrouded in mystery. A wonderful vessel! Condition
Age-commensurate surface wear and abrasions, with small nicks to jaguar head and handle, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and nice root marks throughout.
