Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A delightful blackware stirrup vessel adorned with relief decoration of crabs, chameleons, and lizard-like animals, all sitting upon a planar base. The bulbous vessel is capped by a tubular stirrup spout that doubles as a handle. Wrapping around the body are 4 stippled panels filled alternatingly with a crab or a crested lizard. The dish is additionally embellished by a pair of crabs that sit at the top and a pair of chameleons that crawl up the stirrup spout. Size: 5.9" W x 7.2" H (15 cm x 18.3 cm)
