Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A blackware stirrup vessel with low relief designs of a jaguar, monkey, and waterfowl - probably a duck. A vessel like this one may have been used ceremonially for holding chicha (maize beer) and for pouring libations onto the earth or storing them in the grave. Each animal may have had personal significance for the person this vessel was made for - probably a member of the Chimu elite. Size: 4.5" W x 6" H (11.4 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Baker collection, New Mexico
