Description
Pre-Columbian, Argentina, Aguada culture, ca. 700 to 1000 CE. A rare pottery vessel in the form of a standing quadruped animal with cloven hooves and a thick neck supporting the widened head which is open at the top. Its expressive visage bears two coffee bean shaped eyes, a thin, jutting snout, and pointed ears extending at the sides. On the back of this animorphic figure is an impressive, incised stylized triangular pattern. According to scholar Karen Olsen Bruhns, this understudied Aguada culture is oftentimes dubbed "draconian," precisely because of the reptilian and feline composite creatures featured in their polychrome and grey incised ceramics like this example. (Bruhns, Ancient South America, Cambridge University Press, 1994, p. 260)Size: 6.5" L x 6.625" H (16.5 cm x 16.8 cm)
