Description
(WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON)
JOSEPH C. HORNBLOWER (1777-1864) Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court. A.L.S. with integral address leaf2pp. 4to., Newark, Jan. 20, 1841 to President-elect William Henry Harrison requesting that his son-in-law be appointed a chaplain in the Navy as a Chaplain. In part: "...The Rev. Talbot is a grandson of Commander Talbot, on his father's side and of Commodore Truseton, on the side of his mother. She says that no descendent of either side holds any place in the Navy. When he married my daughter he had a respectable clerkship in the Navy Yard at Brooklyn; but unfortunately he had the independence or impudence to attend and take part in a political meeting adverse to the then administration. An order from Washington soon removed him from his place...It is with reluctance I add one, to I fear many importunate letters, with which you will be harassed: but I could not refuse to throw my little influence in favor of the application...". Very good.
