Description
**Originally Listed At $600**

Engraved by Oliver Pelton (American, 1798-1882) and Denison Kimberly (American, 1814-1863) after Albert Gallatin Hoit (American, 1809-1856), "William Henry Harrison", printed by Charles Thomas, ca. 1842 CE. An original engraving of the 9th President of the United States, William Henry Harrison. In the half-length portrait, he wears a fine black double-breasted suit jacket over a white shirt with a black cravat, and sits proudly on an upholstered chair, facing slightly left. On the right and left margins are symbolic displays of flags and battle weapons; above scenes from the Battle of Tippecanoe and the Battle of the Thames flank an American eagle with a stars and stripes shield; below is a view of Harrison's elegant home at "North Bend, Ohio" as well as wreaths in the bottom corners presenting the U.S. Capitol building and the White House. Size: sheet measures 23.125" L x 18.75" W (58.7 cm x 47.6 cm); plate mark measures 18.875" L x 15.5" W (47.9 cm x 39.4 cm)

The text below the image reads "Painted by A.G. Hoit 1840" (lower left), "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1841 by Chas. A. Wakefield in the Clerks Office of the District Court of Massachusetts" (lower center), and "Engraved by O. Pelton & D. Kimberly" (lower right). Beneath that, "W.H. Harrison NINTH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES BORN FEB. 9TH, 1773 INAUGURATED MARCH 4TH DIED APRIL 4TH 1841" followed by "His last words: "I WISH YOU TO UNDERSTAND THE TRUE PRINCIPLES OF THE GOVERNMENT I WISH THEM CARRIED OUT. I ASK NOTHING MORE." Published by Charles A. Wakefield. No. 56 Cornhill Boston" "Printed by Charles Thomas"

See the same engraving in the collection of the Library of Congress - without the hand coloring, as it was a common practice for coloring to be furnished by a later owner. (https://www.loc.gov/resource/pga.08490/)
