Item Details
Description
black chalk, bodycolour, heightened with gold, on vellum, 150 x 200 mm., some minor rubbing and loss of pigment, surface dirt, and cockling. An unusual depiction of a Venetian masked ball in an interior. Musicians play to an audience of commedia dell arte actors (including a harlequin in the foreground), masked elegantly dressed figures, and general revellers. To the left a lady is exposed, while a brawl breaks out behind. The subject of the scene is comparable to late 16th century paintings of Venetian carnival festivities and balls by artists such as Louis de Caullery (1580-1621), Hieronymus Francken I (c.1540-1610), as well as the engraved views published by Giacomo Franco (1550 1620), but we have been unable to find anything of a comparable nature executed on vellum. Gatherings of Venetians during the Carnival season to dance and enjoy the festivities, such as those depicted in the present work, were known to have taken place on an unregulated scale up until 1638, thereafter the permission of the Venetian Republic was accorded to Marco Dandolo only, to exclusively open public assembly and gaming rooms at his palace at San Moisé, near Piazza San Marco. Katharine Baetjer notes that the intention of the authorities seems to have been to control and derive profit from what had been a widespread and illicit private activity by licensing it in a single public place, the so-called Ridotto pubblico … .[1] The festivities depicted in the current lot are presumably pre-regulation. Behaviour was reported to have been licentious and thievery widespread . [2] [1]. Katharine Baetjer, "Recent Acquisitions, A Selection: 1996-1997."
