Item Details
Description
Western/Southern Europe, northern Italy, perhaps Brescia or Milan, and Germany, ca. 1580s CE. A suit of steel-plate armor used for field duties. The close helmet features a roped vertical crest, a visor secured with a pin and loop, and a pierced floral-shaped ventilation hole beneath the eye slit. The German breastplate is of a peascod form with a V-shaped rib between shoulder straps and a waist strap, and the top of both the breastplate and one-piece German backplate bear roped edges and stamped hallmarks from the Vienna Arsenal. The collar has three plates, a roped upper edge, and hinged openings, and the thigh tassets are composed of nine riveted lames with buckles. Symmetrical pauldrons and vambraces exhibit embossed raised lines and brass rivets, and the gauntlets have pointed cuffs, recessed borders, and several top lames. The symmetrical leg guards consist of a cuisse, poleyns, greaves, and sabatons with locking studs and leather straps with steel rivets. Size: 24.75" W x 66.5" H (62.9 cm x 168.9 cm); 72.8" H (184.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Helmet professionally cleaned, with period replacements to visor and upper bevor that are not original to this helmet, hook attachment replaced, pin on left side is a modern replacement, and gorget plates are later replacements. Replacement to lower fauld and leather straps of breastplate. Three buckles on tassets replaced. Left couter and lower canon of left pauldron replaced. Gauntlet fingers replaced. Right cuisse and poleyn on leg guards replaced, and greaves and sabatons are from the 19th century except for the toe plates. Overall excellent condition with light pitting and expert releathering.
