Description
North America, United States, ca. 1860s to 1870s CE. A collection of medical tools in a velvet-lined wooden case with brass fittings - these were probably used in the field for operations on soldiers during the American Civil War and include a spiral tourniquet stamped "W.F. Ford NY," forceps stamped "A.M. Leslie & Co.," and a long knife, faintly stamped "DT" near the wood handle. A.M. Leslie & Co. operated from the mid to late 1800s, based in St. Louis Missouri, and W.F. Ford was a surgical instrument manufacturer for New York City Hospitals. They also supplied travel cases advertised as United States Army Field and amputation kits during the Civil War - approximately 30,000 amputations were preformed over the course of 4 years during this conflict, so it is highly likely this case was used in the field. Size of box: 15.75" L x 5" W x 2.75" H (40 cm x 12.7 cm x 7 cm); knife: 14.75" L x 1" W (37.5 cm x 2.5 cm)
