Early Etruscan Impasto Ware Chalice
Early Etruscan Impasto Ware Chalice
Item Details
Description
Ancient Europe, Northern Italy, Etruria, ca. late 7th to early 6th century BCE. Wheel-thrown pottery chalice with a flared foot beneath a tapered stem, a broad body, and a thin rim surrounding the deep basin. The highly burnished exterior walls are decorated with a pair of concentric horizontal lines that enclose three short registers of bullseye-style circles, and the entire vessel exhibits a russet-brown coloration. Impasto ware is a coarse type of brown clay used heavily by the earlier Villanovans and was the precursor to the more-recognizable Etruscan bucchero ware pottery. Size: 5.875" W x 4.9" H (14.9 cm x 12.4 cm).
