Book of Hours, Use of Rome, in Latin, illuminated manuscript on parchment [northern Italy (probably Florence), c. 1470] 153 leaves (plus a parchment endleaf at back), wanting a gathering or so from front and back, a few single leaves throughout, and misbound in several places (this partially recoverable from modern pencil foliation made before the misbinding, but not all leaves included in this foliation sequence), collation: i8, ii-iii10, iv1 (of 2, first wanting), v-vii4, viii8, ix10, x4, xi2, xii1 (of 2, wants second), xiii10 (i a singleton tipped in), xiv-xv4, xvi2, xvii6, xviii2 (of 3, i wanting), xix-xxii10, xxiii11 (last a singleton), xxiv8, xxv10, some horizontal catchwords (set within crosses formed of tiny penstrokes), single column, 13 lines in a late gothic bookhand, capitals with fine penwork, small initials in red or blue with contrasting penwork, larger in blue or burnished gold with elaborate contrasting penwork terminating in cross-hatched fruit, nine large coloured initials formed of blue, pink and green acanthus leaf fronds, set on brightly burnished gold grounds, and with foliate extensions into border with similar acanthus leaves, coloured flower heads and bezants encased in delicate penwork, trimmed at top, some ink flaked away from a few leaves, discolouration to leaves at each end, pentrials of letter G to bas-de-page of first leaf, small spots, else in good condition on supple and clean parchment, 133 by 100 mm. (written space: 70 by 50 mm.); early limp parchment binding reusing a fifteenth-century document (refreshed in nineteenth or early twentieth century, and misbound then), gilt-edges The presence of SS. Cosmo and Damian, patron saints of the Medici family of Milan, in the Litany may suggest production for a patron there.
