Description
SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA ATTRIBUTED EARTHENWARE / REDWARE LION FIGURE, manganese- and lead-glazed, the hollow figure with applied cole-slaw mane and long tail with applied cole-slaw end, seated on a slab, face with punched eyes and nostrils, and carved mouth, the feet with carved toes, air-vents to underside of belly and at ears. Attributed to Anthony Weis Baecher (Winchester, VA, 1824-1889) or James Mackley (Mechanicstown [now Thurmont], MD, 1843-1916). Circa 1860-1880. 4 1/2" H, 3 1/4" x 3 1/4" base.

Provenance: Property of a Southern private collector.
Catalogue Note: This figure exhibits a stout frame, large feet, and a clump of hair at the end of its tail, all suggesting it depicts a lion as opposed to the more commonly seen dog figures.
Condition
Excellent overall condition, some loss to front edge of base, minor losses to ears, small colored chip to lip and backside of rear front leg.
