L’opera è una rivisitazione in stile veneto cretese dello scomparto di predella della Pala di Pesaro con San Girolamo nel deserto, di Giovanni Bellini, conservata ai Musei Civici di Pesaro.

La tavola presenta il linguaggio tipico dei pittori greci e cretesi presenti a Venezia nel XVI e XVII secolo. In laguna, sin dalla metà del ‘500, visse una grande comunità ellenica, formatasi con gli anni e aumentata maggiormente dopo la caduta di Costantinopoli in mano turca. Essi si divisero in due filoni e cercarono di soddisfare la grande richiesta di pittura alla greca, ferma agli esempi dell’iconografia classica e ortodossa, e quella alla veneziana o all’occidentale, che vedeva i pittori rileggere in chiave greca le opere dei celeberrimi pittori del Rinascimento veneziano. Tra i pittori rimasti legati alla tradizione, ricordiamo i Rico (Ritzos) e Damasceno (Damaskinos), mentre tra quelli passati completamente ad una definizione occidentale si ricordano El Greco e Antonio Vassilacchi detto l'Aliense. Tra i pittori che cercarono una via di assimilazione e fusione delle due scuole pittoriche è necessario citare Giovanni Permeniate, come dimostrano le sue due opere conservate presso il Museo Correr di Venezia, una delle quali firmata.

The artwork is a reinterpretation in Venetian Cretan style of the predella compartment of the Pesaro Altarpiece with Saint Jerome in the Desert, by Giovanni Bellini, preserved in the Civic Museums of Pesaro.

The panel presents the typical language of the Greek and Cretan painters present in Venice in the 16th and 17th centuries. Since the mid-16th century, a large Hellenic community has lived in the lagoon, which formed over the years and increased further after the fall of Constantinople into Turkish hands. They split into two strands and tried to satisfy the great demand for Greek-style painting, based on examples of classical and Orthodox iconography, and Venetian or Western-style painting, which saw painters rereading the artworks of the famous painters in a Greek key of the Venetian Renaissance. Among the painters who remained linked to tradition, we remember Rico (Ritzos) and Damasceno (Damaskinos), while among those who completely passed to a Western definition, we remember El Greco and Antonio Vassilacchi known as Aliense. Among the painters who sought a way of assimilation and fusion of the two pictorial schools, it is necessary to mention Giovanni Permeniate, as demonstrated by his two works preserved in the Correr Museum in Venice, one of which is signed.
