Rare first state of Mitchell’s Plan of Philadelphia. From the rare 1860 New General Atlas published by Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr. for just the first few months of 1860. After March of that year, he published a second printing where the page number on the Philadelphia map was relocated to the bottom right corner of the map frame. It is one of two American maps in the entire atlas with page numbers; all the rest had plate numbers inside the frames. (See first part of description of Lot 1). The first edition of this map has vivid hand coloring and much more defined printing, especially in the finer details of the ornate border. Shows the city of Philadelphia with major streets, squares, rail, and parks identified. Numerous buildings are named (Banks, Museums, Libraries, Hotels). Also shows Ferry routes, Steamboat routes and Sand Bars in the Delaware River. An excellent view of the city as it existed just before the onset of the Civil War. Light marks around margins. Water stain ¼” at bottom right edge. A rare piece of cartographic history. 11 x 12.75
